Amazon Reveals Plans to Cut 16,000 Jobs
The Seattle-based tech titan confirmed the workforce reduction in an official statement, acknowledging the human toll while framing the cuts as necessary for future competitiveness. "The reductions we are making today will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon, and we're again working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted," Amazon said in a statement.
This marks the second major workforce contraction in recent months. The company previously terminated 14,000 corporate employees in October, bringing total job cuts to 30,000 within a matter of months.
Despite the sweeping eliminations, Amazon emphasized continued investment in areas deemed critical to long-term strategy. "While we're making these changes, we'll also continue hiring and investing in strategic areas and functions that are critical to our future. We're still in the early stages of building every one of our businesses and there's significant opportunity ahead," Amazon said.
Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people experience and technology, defended the restructuring as an essential response to accelerating market dynamics. "Just as we always have, every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate," she stated. "That's never been more important than it is today in a world that's changing faster than ever."
The layoffs primarily target corporate roles rather than frontline operations. Amazon employed 1.578 million workers as of the third quarter of 2025, with the vast majority comprising hourly warehouse staff who remain largely insulated from the current reduction wave.
